This is an unpublished painting by the Lombard artist Giovanni Battista Moroni, one of the greatest Renaissance portraitists of the Italian School of Painting of the period. The authorship of the work is confirmed in a detailed and learned study by professor Simone Facchinetti, the artist's leading international reference specialist. The scholar dates the work to around the 1560s: a period corresponding to one of the most intense and successful phases of the painter's production … when he was pursuing an increasingly personal approach to natural portraiture.
