SOLD to a PROMINENT EUROPEAN PRIVATE COLLECTION
This remarkable painting is the first version of Zurbarán's celebrated subject to have been handled by the gallery.
The painting bears surviving traces of the artist's signature and, importantly, the precise date of its execution. On the basis of the works of the same subject catalogued by Odile Delenda, the leading authority on the artist, it appears to be the earliest version so far recorded and the prototype from which four further replicas derive. The existence of these closely related works attests to the considerable success enjoyed by this particular Christological iconography devised by the artist.
